StudioTech 57: GoPro Hero 3 Black and the SDI challenge

Find out how to get a reliable SDI source from a GoPro Hero 3 Black camera.

This testing was all done on GoPro software version: HD3.03.02.00.

The Blackmagic Design HDMI to SDI mini converter was updated to the 2.0 level firmware.

Key points:

1/ Always power the GoPro down after making a change to the output settings.

2/ What the settings are is not always reflected on the HDMI output!

3/ The 1080p outputs are not reliably captured by all equipment.

4/ Some televisions will display the 1080p output!

5/ The only reliable outputs we would use for SDI conversion are:

PAL users – 720-100 on the GoPro which produces 720p50 on the HDMI port

NTSC users – 720-120 on the GoPro which produces 720p59.94 on the HDMI port

Here are the results of our testing with a Blackmagic Design Teranex 2D, the GoPro column shows what the GoPro is set to, the Teranex column shows what the Teranex is receiving from the GoPro:
