History – Both Thomas Alva Edison and Emile Berliner filed patent applications for the carbon microphone, in March and June 1877 respectively. After a long legal battle, Edison emerged the victor, and the Berliner patent was ruled invalid by both American and British courts. (A carbon microphone is the type of element that was part of OLD telephone systems.)

– When your mic requires a preamp, and a mixer is the only one you have
CAVEAT! Be very careful with equalization and compression!

When to use USB
– Simple setups
– Save money
– Remote broadcasting
– Guest broadcast

Direct connection
– 3.5” mini plug
– Less than optimum sound quality
– Usually inexpensive microphones
– DC bias can damage good quality microphone (be careful)
