StudioTech Live!: 77 – Starting a video Podcast – Blackmagic Television Studio / Wirecast

Rob Ashard (broadcast TV sound supremo) joins us in the studio to talk about his experience of creating the first two episodes of Corvette Web Blast (YouTube Link), the first with Wirecast and the second with a Blackmagic Design Television Studio.

Rob’s system:-

Blackmagic Design Television Studio, inputs 1-4 HDMI, 5&6 SDI:

1/ Mac Air Skype 1 + Display port to HDMI lead (off eBay for £7)
2/ MacBook Pro Skype 2 + Display port to HDMI lead
3/ Mac Air iPhoto + Display port to HDMI lead
4/ Sony HDMI camcorder for 2-shot on 5m Vivo HDMI lead
5&6/ Sony EX1’s SDI for close ups

TVS o/p to Matrox MX02 Mini running on MBP which also runs ATEM control.

Skype Macs have EzCaps usb inputs. These are built into a box attached to a 1U panel with one video input paralled to both on the front, and two quarter inch jack audio inputs for the two mix minus’s, so sound and pictures to Skype go in on USB. Picture out comes out of display port, and sound out comes out of headphone socket.

Matrox HDMI output to HDMI-to-composite video convertor (£22 off eBay) split into Skype box and on-set monitor. We had a faulty EzCap so used an ADVC 110 with a Thunderbolt to Firewire convertor to get audio and video into the second Skype mac.
